IT COUNTS — Rell Peck, Salem centerfielder, scored all the way from first base on Orbin Grimes’ three run double in the third inning of the semi-final round game between Salem and St. John’s in Murray Regional Baseball Tournament on Wednesday, Peck reached first on a fielder’s choice. Salem team supports coach’s boast by winning regional

MURRAY, KY., MAY 20 (Special)— “We can beat any team we play!”
That was Salem Coach George Whitecotton’s boast in the morning session of the regional tourney here Wednesday and he proved to be a prophet as his team won the Murray Regional Tournament of the third straight year by beating Murray High 5-2 in the finals.
Earlier in the day, Salem dropped the tourney favorite, St. John’s, by a 6-3 score, and Murray High won a thrilling 1-0 decision from South Christian.
The Red Devils will play in the Kentucky State High School Baseball Tournament in Louisville May 28-29.
Salem forged into a 1-0 lead over Murray High in the first inning and scored two more in the second to hold a 3-0 lead before the Tigers scored two runs in the third inning. Salem decided the game with two runs in the sixth inning.

Grimes Starts Rally
Salem’s first-inning run came when Harry Hardin singled, stole second and third and scored on an infield out.
In the second inning, Orbin Grimes started the Salem rally by walking and Jim Belt doubled, moving Grimes to third. Donnie Tharp brought Grimes home with an infield bouncer and Thomas Loyd singled Belt home with the second run of the inning.
The sixth inning tallies came as Rell Peck singled, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on Grimes’ single. Grimes stole second and Abell doubled the plate the second run of the inning.
Murray High’s tow runs resulted when Tom Rushing and Joe Orr singled and Dale Alexander hilt back to the pitcher who threw wildly to first base allowing one run to score and Orr moved to third. Dick Charles was hit by a pitched ball and Belt uncorked a wild pitch to allow the second Murray run to score.
Hardin led the Salem hitters with two hits in four trips. Rushing and Orr had two hits each for the Murrayans.
Belt went the distance on the mound for Salem and gained 11 strikeouts while allowing seven hits.
Dale Alexander was the loser, giving up seven hits.
In the first round game, Salem scored one run in the first inning, added three in the third and two in the seventh in beating St. John’s.
St. John’s scored its three runs in the sixth inning to pull within striking distance, but the Salem club spurted in the next inning to win handily.
Tom Loyd tamed the St. John’s team with only five hits and gained nine strikeouts in beating the for the second time this season.
Grimes led the Salem hitters with two hits, a single and a double, and three runs-batted-in.
Joe Orr was the whole show for Murray High against South Christian in the other morning game as the little right-hander pitched and batted the Tigers to victory.
Orr hit a long home run to right centerfield in the first inning for the only run of the game and hurled three-hit ball for his team.
Sowell, 14-year-old South Christian pitcher, was equally as good as the mound as he allowed only three hits, but Orr’s homer decided the contest.
